(19-03-2024) The Geological, Mining, and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMMET), the national geological service, presented the bulletin “Geology of the Eastern Cordillera Batholith in the Carabaya segment, Southern Peru”, which constitutes the first regional study of petrogenetic research carried out by the institution and by a predominantly national research team.

The Eastern Cordillera Batholith (ECB) is a little-explored igneous structure, regarding the age of its rocks and their apparent affiliations with commodity elements. In this research, a petrogenetic analysis of great detail was employed, discovering the genetic relationships of intrusive rocks with strategic and/or near-strategic elements such as Li, U, Th, La, among others, which undoubtedly opens up new exploration opportunities.

The objectives of the development of this study, in addition to investigating the petrogenesis of the Eastern Cordillera Batholith, are: to establish the magmatic units that compose the batholith, to determine the genetic affiliations of the rocks with economic and strategic elements, to evidence zones with exploration potential; to present a geological research methodology for intrusive rocks, which could be replicated in other batholiths.
