(01-12-2023) Jorge León Benavides, President of the Canada Peru Chamber of Commerce, announced the preparations and opening of registration for the Peruvian delegation that will participate in the next convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), at the beginning of next March.

This was part of his welcome speech to the guests at the Canadian Business Cocktail, an end-of-year event organized on November 30th by the entity he presides over, at the residence of the Ambassador of Canada to Peru and Bolivia, Louis Marcotte.

In 2024, Canada and Peru will celebrate the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations and the 15th anniversary of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries, highlighted Ambassador Marcotte. He recalled that since the entry into force of the bilateral trade agreement in 2009, trade between the two countries has more than doubled, making Canada Peru’s 5th most important trading partner in the world.

Additionally, the Free Trade Agreement has facilitated conditions for increased Canadian investment in Peru, which has grown by 130% in the last 15 years, making Peru the second-largest bilateral trading partner of Canada in South America. Canada is thus one of the most significant investors in Peru, particularly in the extractive, banking, and infrastructure sectors.

Ambassador Marcotte also acknowledged the significant role played by the partners of the Canada-Peru Chamber of Commerce, whose establishment in 1995 coincided with the arrival of the first Canadian mining companies in Peru. He stated, “The Chamber has been and continues to be a reliable partner, not only in the promotion and development of close trade relations but also in the educational and cultural promotion between Canada and Peru,” emphasizing the role it will undoubtedly continue to play next year when Peru takes the lead as the host of APEC.

“Canada is important for Peru’s prosperity, and Peru is important for Canada’s prosperity. Let us continue working together to further strengthen these trade ties,” he said, extending his best wishes for peace and prosperity to all attendees for the year 2024.
