(16-09-2024) Between 2004 and 2023, the Camisea natural gas operation generated more than S/ 203 billion (2.3% of GDP) for the country, according to a study by the consulting firm Macroconsult, presented by its director Gonzalo Tamayo at an event organized by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy (SNMPE).

During its 20 years of operations, the Camisea Consortium, Transportadora de Gas del Perú (TGP), and Cálidda, contributed approximately S/ 67 billion in royalties and income tax, equivalent to the construction of 277 hospitals, 1,055 High-Performance Schools, and 21,000 km of roads. Additionally, the three companies helped reduce the fiscal deficit by around 30% between 2004 and 2023.

“The Camisea project has consolidated itself as one of the key engines of the country’s energy development. The investment by the Camisea Consortium, TGP, and Cálidda totaled more than S/ 29 billion, of which S/ 22 billion was invested in local components and another S/ 7 billion in imported components”, said Tamayo.

In that sense, Camisea contributed to the country’s trade balance with around US$ 170 billion (approximately S/ 630 billion at present value), contributing roughly half of the commercial surplus achieved during that period.

It was also highlighted that, between 2001 and 2023, the Camisea Consortium, TGP, and Cálidda allocated more than S/ 838 million to social investment in different regions of Peru. Additionally, for every direct job in the Camisea Consortium, TGP, and Cálidda, seven additional indirect jobs are generated in the economy, reaching approximately 56,000 jobs annually.

Camisea played a crucial role in the massification of natural gas in Peru, benefiting more than 2 million homes, industries, and businesses in 10 regions of the country between 2004 and 2023. This allowed savings of S/ 414 billion for users and significantly improved air quality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15%.

Perspectives on massification

“We are committed to bringing natural gas to the homes of Lima and Callao and, in the future, expanding the domestic network to the central and southern regions of the country. For this reason, we have presented a self-sustaining project to the State – which is currently under evaluation – to make this goal a reality. Our purpose is to continue generating well-being and equal opportunities for Peruvian families”, said Martín Mejía, general director of Cálidda.

Under the administration of TGP, the transportation of Camisea gas through the 730-kilometer pipeline that runs from the Amazon jungle to the coast, crossing the Andes, has recorded 99.9% availability in these 20 years, reflecting uninterrupted distribution of the resource.

“In the next 20 years, natural gas will be a fundamental pillar to facilitate the transition to a cleaner future and ensure a continuous energy supply. Its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to the use of other fossil fuels, as well as its safety and stability, make it ideal to complement – or replace, when necessary – renewable energies such as solar and wind, which are intermittent”, said Tomás Delgado Farizo, general manager of TGP.
